And Not For Justice
Hartley Audio Files
Transcriptions from Dr. Hartley’s audio files:
11/19/2010 – With the approval of Senator Alexander, we have brought other specialists on board. We have concluded the bacteria is almost a phage for human cells.
11/21/10 – Human injection trials proceed well, but we have confirmed a strong immune response in all subjects. There appears to be no difficulty in fighting off this infection.
11/22/10 – Doctor Evans claims that the phage targets cells showing apoptosis morphology, perhaps explaining why the bacteria is so well tolerated in the original subjects. He believes, but has not yet proven, that senescent cells may also be targeted.
11/23/10 – We have begun immunosuppressive trials. Because of the poor virulence of the phage, a powerful regime is required for infection to take hold. We have demonstrated some positive results, including some unusual abilities similar to those the original subjects manifested.
11/24/10 – We have observed some consistent, if subtle, morphological changes in the subjects, many in the brain. The purpose, if there is one, of these changes is difficult to ascertain. Doctor Evans believes they result in the increase in stem cell activity necessary to replenish cells consumed by the phage. Needless to say, we are concerned about the cancer risk.
11/25/10 – Trials have produced mixed results. 4 of the 11 have died, and only one remains functional. It is difficult to partition the cause of failure – certainly many have succumbed to opportunistic infections, or from side effects of their abilities, but five have simply gone catatonic. No oncology has been reported.
11/26/10 – A new set of trials on patients with active oncologies has confirmed the anti-neoplastic effects of the phage. The implications are staggering. However, at the moment, the side effects of severe immunosuppressive therapy are far more dangerous than any chemotherapy, not to mention the continued tendency of patients to lapse into coma. Apparently, the morphological changes in the brain overcome the neuroplasticity of most patients.
11/26/10 – 2 – Prisoners! Apparently our subjects are all prisoners! I should never have investigated – I haven’t asked questions so far, why should I start now? One of them seems to have caused the snowstorm yesterday – or, at the very least, the snow didn’t stop until he died.
11/27/10 – I am being shut out of the investigation. I brought this together, and now Senator Alexander is doing something behind my back.
11/27/10 – 2- All patients are either deceased or unresponsive. Ceasing immunosuppressive therapy does remove the infection, but the morphological changes are permanent.
11/29/10 – I got access to Dr. Evan’s notes. Kids! Teenagers! They have begun experimenting on teenagers and younger patients. I am going to take my chances – I can’t let this go on.
